Are Wittgenstein’s investigations into language relevant also for our
understanding of ethics and animal life? This three-day conference,
organized by the newly-formed Nordic Wittgenstein Society, wishes to
highlight the broader cultural significance of Wittgenstein’s work.
His almost anthropological emphasis on linguistic context, on forms of
life that harbour occasionally foreign practices and sensitivities,
counteracts intellectual tendencies towards idealization and makes
philosophy open to varieties of life forms, and to new kinds of
human-animal comparisons.
The conference program will include five keynote talks and 14-20
shorter paper presentations. We invite researchers and PhD-students,
inside and outside of philosophy (e.g., literature, film studies,
animal welfare), to submit abstracts on Wittgenstein-inspired
inquiries into language, ethics and animal life. Each speaker will be
allotted 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.
Abstracts should be:
• submitted no later than 1 February 2010
• have a maximum of 2.000 signs
• e-mailed to: Niklas Forsberg – niklas.forsberg(a)filosofi.uu.se
